The Mod Squad (1968-1973)

The classic TV show The Mod Squad (1968-1973) was one of the "grooviest" shows ever. It is about three teenagers from different backgrounds who had been in trouble with the law. Now they help others by solving crimes with the help of the Lieutenant (Tige Andrews). Out of all the Aaron Spelling shows that he ever produced this was one of my favorites. The concept of this show was to deal with social issues as it did crime in the streets. Pete, Linc and Julie were the kids of their generation. They wore some of the grooviest fashions ever from that period along with the styling of the Afro. Cochran drove an old green "woody" side-paneled station wagon that became a lasting symbol of the show, along with cool bell-bottoms! The show was a top ten hit when it ran on ABC from 1968-1973. The executive producers were Danny Thomas (of Make Room for Daddy fame),and Sheldon Leonard (who was also producing I Spy and Andy Griffith at the time). Cast: Michael Cole,Peggy Lipton, Clarence Williams III.
The guest stars who appear on the show were making their mark during its run with stars like Richard Dreyfuss, Richard Pryor, Michael Douglas, and Karen Black.

Later Peggy Lipton, played Norma the waitress in another classic - Twin Peaks - was nominated for an Emmy for her role as Julie, and won a Golden Globe in 1970 for her portrayal of the character.)

  1. Dawn, I used to love the Mod Squad. I always wanted to have Peggy Lipton's long blonde thin straight hair, and could never get my thick, dark, wavy hair to do it! I would look terrible as a blonde anyway, but I used to iron my hair on the ironing board trying to straighten it just to get that straight look!

  2. Dawn, I didn't watch THE MOD SQUAD when it was on the air originally, but saw a few episodes years later (which made the "hip factor" all the more fun). I had no idea that its guest star list was so impressive! I thought Peggy Lipton was very good in TWIN PEAKS. She was married to music producer/composer Quincy Jones for several years.

  3. I also liked The Mod Squad. Peggy Lipton seemed so laid back and it was fun to have a female in a lead role fighting crime. I was thrilled to see her again in Twin Peaks. And I sure would like a piece of pie now. Fun and groovy post, Dawn!

  5. Norma wasn't just a waitress. She ran the Double R Diner! And she always served cherry pie and damn good coffee.

  7. the two things i remember most about this show have not been mentioned by anybody else - it had a fast paced, catchy tune for a theme song(i can still hear it in my mind whenever someone mentions the show), and watching the three stars running together during the opening of the show. does anyone else remember that stuff? veejay

  8. Veejay I do the. The theme was done by Earle Hagen, who also did the theme for I Spy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and of course "Down to The Fishin Hole" AKA the Andy Griffth Show theme.

  10. When were Michael Douglas and Karen Black on the show? I have a fair knowledge of the episodes and casts, and unless they were uncredited like Harrison Ford was in the pilot, I don't associate them with Mod Squad.
