TV Detective Theme Month Would Not Be Complete Without....

                    Droopy, The Master Detective

I promised Rick an article today and I couldn't deliver.  Until I do, allow me to offer my favorite TV detective of all.  Droopy was a creation of the great Tex Avery, produced by Hanna-Barbera (who else?) in 1993.  My memory must be failing -- I could have sworn Droopy was much older and been around a long time!  Droopy was only on TV for about a year in 1993 in some squirrel show (no, not Rocky).   But what an unforgettable pooch...

You have to love Droopy.  Sad eyes, jowly, completely deadpan delivery in his little nasal voice.  Criminals usually ended up getting caught because Droopy drove them crazy -- no matter what they did or where they went, Droopy always appeared, saying "Hi, there" in his flat voice.  The bad guys were usually happy to jump into the old paddywagon after their experience with the master hound.

Thank you, Droopy, for keeping the streets of Cartoonville safe from the criminal element!

"I'm afraid I have to take you to jail now."
"Hi, there"

  2. Becky, I was an intern at a local TV station for two summers. One of my jobs was programming the afternoon kids' show--which meant I got to select the cartoons. Droopy was very popular for those two summers!

  3. Hello, Becky and all you happy people! :-) I've loved Droopy since I saw the original MGM movie-theater cartoon shorts aired on TV as a youngster. He's everywhere, like Cecil Turtle in those Warner Bros. cartoons with Bugs Bunny (one of the few times he ever got flummoxed :-)), with a bit of Columbo about him. Droopy is the man, er, dog, and even our daughter Siobhan loves him (even while she, too, wonders how Droopy gets around so quickly :-)).

  4. Becky, I was always amazed at how nothing seemed to faze Droopy. He also moved faster than anyone could ever imagine as DorianTB noted. Nathanael Hood was right: he seems to be everywhere (but not to be confused with Savoir Faire is everywhere!) This was a fun post!

  6. Doesn't Droopy date back to the 1950s? He had the most unique voice also; deep and toneless, it seemed too big for his tiny body (anyone know who did his voice?). Fun post!

  7. Nate, Rick, Toto and Doc, thanks for sharing your memories and funny thoughts about Droopy.

Dorian and Grand Old Movies, I appreciate your reminder of how long ago Droopy was actually created (1943 for MGM). I obviously did just a VERY cursory search for Droopy as the detective TV character. I'm glad to know that my brain is working just as well as ever (however good that is!)

  8. I remember Droopy. Didn't he have a son for a side kick?
