1st Annual Halloween Classic Movie Super Quiz (Part 1)

So you think you know classic horror films? Welcome to the Cafe's first annual (we hope) Halloween Classic Movie Super Quiz. This 50-question quiz--presented in two parts--will draw upon your knowledge of the horror film genre from the silent era to the early 1980s. If you want to answer a question, please include the its number in your response. Please don't answer all the questions at once--let other people have fun, too! Use of references is allowed--but I didn't use any to write the questions.

If you're grading yourself:  46-50 correct answers means that--like me--you've spent too much time watching spooky movies! 40-45 means you're a horror film authority who routinely amazes your friends. 30-39 means you typically breeze through all the movie categories on Jeopardy! Any score over 20 is pretty impressive; a fellow film buff validated the quiz and found some questions to be difficult.

Answers will be printed at the end of the week (if they're not all answered before then).

  1. I'd like to answer all of them. I love horror movies and it's the perfect month to watch them. #6 is Glenn Strange, who was Sam the bartender at the Long Branch Saloon and also the Frankenstein Monster in three movies. #20 is Fredric March as Jekyll/Hyde.

    1. Right on all counts! Glenn had the right physique for the Monster, but just didn't get good scripts ("Argghhh!").

  2. Fun quiz. #11 would be Frankenstein's Monster, Dracula, Werewolf, and The Invisable Man.

    1. Nice, especially with the Invisible Man! I thought folks might forget his cameo.

  3. #1 - They were also filming the Mexican version of Dracula with the same set.
    #10 - Wolfbane.
#3 - Yes, if you count the ghost of Irina, who was a Cat Person.
#17 - The sunlight hits him and he vanishes.

    Great contest! I love these!

    1. Becky, I knew you'd do well on this! Since Irena never turned into a cat person in CURSE, I'd say there were no cat people...but you covered all bases with your answer.

  4. 11) Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, Dracula and the Invisible Man near the very end.

The other few that I knew were already answered. Obviously I know zilch about horror movies. Oh wait, I don't like horror movies...maybe that's why.

Though I love ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN and DRACULA with Bela Lugosi and a few others mentioned. I am not entirely without horror credentials. Ha.

    1. A&C MEET FRANKENSTEIN is always delightful...but especially at this time of year.

  5. I can answer the Hammer ones. Spoiler alert to anyone who's still taking the quiz.

    5. The same thing that led to the creature being created.

    9. Brian Clemens writer/director of CAPTAIN KRONOS and chief writer for THE AVENGERS, and I think the composer for the movie wrote the theme for the show -- the theme everyone knows, I mean.

    15. THE VAMPIRE LOVERS, LUST FOR A VAMPIRE and the totally awesome TWINS OF EVIL. (Actually, they're all very good.)

    21. Both based on Bram Stoker novels.

    22. The charming and gorgeous Stephanie Zimbalist.

    Actually, this one, too:

    23. I'm guessing Paul Naschy, because I'm pretty sure he starred in every single Spanish horror film ever made.

Sorry for the ones I got wrong! Much fun!

    1. Thank you! I was worried that the Hammer questions might be go unanswered--and you got them all. You're right, of course, about Paul (and Jesus Franco directed every Spanish horror film...). As for KRONOS, I called Laurie Johnson a girl for more years than I'd care to admit.

  6. Fun post!
#4 "The Last Man on Earth"
    #18 a man frog
#19 Henry (as opposed to Victor)
#24 Michael Landon in "I Was a Teenage Werewolf"

    1. Excellent job, Toto! THE LAST MAN ON EARTH is a personal favorite--very underrated and still (in my opinion) the best version of Richard Matheson's I AM LEGEND.

  7. I made sure I didn't look at anyone else's answers to see if I actually know any. Here goes...

La respuesta del numero 1 es DRACULA en espanol con Villarias haciendo el papel del Vampiro.

#11 - Frankenstein's Monster, Dracula, The Wolf Man and the Invisible Man.

#16 - Synthetic flesh is DR. X! Have never seen it but heard a conversation about it recently. I'm afraid I don't know the historical significance.

I'm quitting while I'm ahead. GREAT idea!

  8. Aurora, that's absolutely the best answer to #1 and--like all your others--it's naturally correct. The historical significance of DOCTOR X may be black & white to some viewers...depending on what station showed the movie.
