What do Gene and Robin have in common? |
With autumn just around the corner, that means, well, it's time for another edition of our most popular game. As always, you will be given a pair or trio of films or performers. Your task is to find the common connection. It could be anything--two stars who acted in the same movie, two movies that share a common theme, etc. As always, don't answer all the questions so others can play, too. There is a single best answer for each question.
1. Bert Lahr and Gale Sondergaard.
2. Robin Williams and Gene Hackman,
3. James Darren and Scott Bakula.
4. Pam Grier and Fred Astaire. (Hope you know your Pam Grier movies!)
5. Steve McQueen and Steve Martin.
6. Monte Markham and Raymond Burr. (An easy one!)
7. Jack Palance and Frank Langella.
8. Helen Reddy and Ralph Richardson.
9. Jack Lemmon and Dean Martin. (Similar to a recent question!)
10. Dudley Moore and David Hedison.
11. George Peppard and Richard Boone.
12. The Clint Eastwood film The Beguiled and the TV series The Odd Couple.
13. Dirk Bogarde and Amy Irving. (Maybe the hardest one?)
14. Die, Monster, Die and The Haunted Palace.
15. Tony Curtis and Alan Ladd.
#1. Gale Sondergaard and Bert Lahr both played feline characters, Lahr a lion in The Wizard of Oz and Sondergaard a house cat in The Bluebird.
ReplyDelete#3. My first thought went to time travel (Time Tunnel, Quantum Leap) and then I went to the fact that both fellows are mighty fine singers.
#7. Dracula has been portrayed by Jack Palance and Frank Langella.
#6 is just way too easy. I can't even answer that one. I should, but I just can't.
You're correct on all three, of course! Yes, I should have replaced #6, especially after a Monte Markham question last month.
Delete8. Dragons. Helen was in Pete’s Dragon and Ralph in Dragonslayer.
ReplyDeleteAh, a very fiery answer, Toto...and a correct one!
DeleteNot to take more than my fair share, but I'd like to give these four a try:
ReplyDelete8. Both starred in films about dragons, Reddy in the original "Pete's Dragon" and Richardson in "Dragonslayer."
9. Martin played a pilot in the original "Airport" and Lemmon succeeded him in "Airport '77."
12. The link here is child actress Pamelyn Ferdin, one of the schoolgirls in "The Beguiled" and Felix's daughter Edna in "The Odd Couple."
13. Is it that both once played pianists, Bogarde in the anthology drama "Quartet" and Irving in "The Competition"?
Thanks for a very entertaining quiz.
Toto just beat you to the Dragons response, but you did great on all your answers! The pianists connection was a tough one. Not many people have seen QUARTET and the Bogarde segment is so sad.
Delete5. Famous numbered cowboy groups on film -- Steve McQueen in The Magnificent Seven and Steve Martin in The Three Amigos.
ReplyDeleteThat is true, but there is another connection.
Delete15. Films about knights made in the early 50s - Curtis in The Black Shield of Falworth and Ladd in The Black Knight.
ReplyDeleteVery impressive!
Delete6. Perry Mason - Monty in the short-lived The New Perry Mason (though I never saw that one -- I guess I was out having too much fun in the early 70s to watch much TV).
ReplyDeleteI watched it once or twice, but it didn't make much of an impression. I'd love to see an episode now and so I periodically check YouTube to see if someone has posted one.
DeleteRecap: Still needing answers are 2, 4, 5, 10, 11, and 14.
ReplyDelete#11 Both starred in series on The NBC Mystery Movie during the 1972-74 TV seasons (Peppard was "Banacek" while Boone played "Hec Ramsey").
ReplyDelete#14 Both were based on H. P. Lovecraft stories
Well done, Davey! A lot of folks don't know that DIE, MONSTER, DIE was based on Lovecraft's "The Colour Out of Space."
Delete5. Detectives - McQueen in Bullitt and Martin in Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid.
ReplyDeleteYou're finding all kinds of connections between these two! My first thought was firemen (see below).
Delete2. Other than The Birdcage -- cartoon characters - Hackman as Lex Luther and Williams as Popeye.
ReplyDeleteVery good! There's also another connection related to one that you mentioned.
Delete5. Firemen. Towering Inferno, Roxanne.
ReplyDelete11. Single-named crimefighters. Banacek, Paladin.
Both starred in hospital drama series.
Great job on #5 (which was tough). True on 11, but my first thought was the Mystery Movie connection mentioned above.
Delete4. Ghosts of Mars, Ghost Story...
ReplyDeleteA nice ghostly answer. There's another connection, too.
Delete2. In drag.
ReplyDeleteVery good. There’s still another connection.
Delete10. Top hit theme songs - Hedison with Live and Let Die and Moore with Arthur's Theme.
ReplyDeleteTrue!
Delete10. Flies. The Fly, Bedazzled.
ReplyDeleteYes, they both were transformed into flies!
Delete10. David was in Five Fingers and Dudley Moore was in Five More.
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting connection, too, as is the Robin Hood one below!
Delete10. Both were in movies about Robin Hood. David Hedison was in "The Son of Robin Hood" and Dudley Moore was in "When Things Were Rotten".
ReplyDelete2. They both played characters named Popeye - Hackman as Popeye Doyle in The French Connection and Williams played Popeye in the the 1980 film Popeye.
ReplyDeleteVery well done, beachgal!
DeleteThere is yet an answer to the Fred Astaire-Pam Grier connection and it involves an occupation.
ReplyDelete4. Photographers. Friday Foster, Funny Face. Double F's.
ReplyDelete4. Both are magazine photographers - Astaire in Funny Face and Grier in Friday Foster.
ReplyDeleteTwo fine players get the last question. How appropriate! Thanks to everyone who played this month!
