The Snubbed By the Oscars Awards...The Results Are In!

Earlier this month, the Cafe's staff selected twenty performers snubbed by the Oscars and placed them in categories based on one of their most famous performances. We then asked classic film fans to vote in an online poll to select the winners of our first-ever Snubbed By the Oscars Awards!

We'd like to thank everyone who took the time to complete their ballots. To our surprise, we reached the maximum number of votes allowed by our (free) survey software in less than two weeks. Our accountants tell us we can't provide the voting percentages for each performer in each category. However, we will state that Best Supporting Actor was by far the most competitive category.

Without further discussion, here are the winners:

Robert Mitchum showing "love."
Best Actor
Richard Burton, Becket
Kirk Douglas, Ace in the Hole
Cary Grant, Notorious
Robert Mitchum, Night of the Hunter
Peter O’Toole, Lawrence of Arabia

Best Actress

Deborah Kerr, The Innocents
Marilyn Monroe, Some Like It Hot
Barbara Stanwyck, Double Indemnity
Gene Tierney, Leave Her to Heaven

Margaret Hamilton, The Wizard of Oz
Elsa Lanchester, Witness for the Prosecution
Angela Lansbury, The Manchurian Candidate
Agnes Moorehead, The Magnificent Ambersons
Thelma Ritter, Rear Window

  1. An Oscar tally I can get behind. I know everybody! I might start watching the Oscars again if they provided the celebrities with name tags.

  2. Bravo! I think all my choices won, except for Best Actor. This was a terrific poll, Rick. Much more meaningful than recent Oscar choices...

    1. I've so lost interest in the Oscars these days. At one time in my life, it was appointment TV.

    2. I agree, Silver Screenings!

  3. WOO HOO! Three of my choices won! MITCHUM, STANWYCK & LANSBURY. Miss Lansbury is the only woman on the list that is still living. She is 93. It would be great if she finds out about this poll.(The only man still living is Kirk Douglas at 102!)

  4. I agree with all of the actors on the snubbed list Rick, though the biggest snub and the winner in my book was for Andy Griffith in A Face in the Crowd - he wasn't even nominated by the Academy (here neither?)

    1. I want to thank you for mentioning ANDY GRIFFITH. I was the one that stated that a writer said in his book that he thought ANDY should have won the OSCAR. He was a versatile actor. Andy was an Emmy nominee for a TV Movie, MURDER IN TEXAS. He received a PEOPLES CHOICE AWARD for MATLOCK.But more important than awards is that he lives on in the hearts of his millions of fans.

  5. I'm not sure if 3 or 4 of mine won (I voted for Mitchum, Kerr, Lansbury and either Robinson or Greenstreet), but every one is a worthy candidate and I wouldn't think of arguing with these results.

This poll reminds me of an amusing tweet I saw yesterday, a picture of Grace Kelly in 1955 with the Best Actress Oscar. The caption read (something like): Grace Kelly is pictured here holding Judy Garland's Oscar.

  6. I'm glad that Ms. Stanwyck was recognized here. Hard to believe she never won the real thing.

I guess in 20 years or so you can add Glenn Close to an updated list. Not just the latest Oscar snub but also for "The World According to Garp."

  7. Also maybe Diane Lane and Meg Ryan.

    1. Neither one ever gave a performance worthy of an Oscar nomination, though I like them both.

    2. Diane Lane did receive an OSCAR nomination for UNFAITHFUL.

  8. I was surprised to read that RICHARD GERE never got a nom. HARRISON FORD received one nom.

    1. What would Richard Gere have gotten one for? Can't think of anything worthy, though he was pretty good in a few films. Certainly doesn't belong in the conversation with the actors listed in the post! Harrison Ford was pretty good in "Regarding Henry."

    2. Richard Gere was in Unfaithful with Diane Lane. He was in the hit musical CHICAGO. He won some awards for that movie including the GOLDEN GLOBE.

    3. Claude Chabrol's "La Femme Infidèle" is vastly superior to its American remake. Now, it deserved an Oscar! I'll stop here since, as Rick said, we're way off topic of the original post.
