Great choices: The Andromeda Strain and The Power.
I love both versions of THE THING for different reasons. DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL works on so many different levels. And it's hard to believe that GODZILLA has now spawned 32 additional films and a huge merchandise industry! (Apparently, we are among the few people in the world that think THE POWER is an interesting sci fi movie.)
DeleteYeah, Rick, if nothing else, George Hamilton has The Power and Love At First Bite to hang his hat on, career-wise. The Power is just a good story.

I love Richard Matheson's somewhat existential ending to SHRINKING MAN. To my surprise, no one mentioned EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS on Twitter, but the scene where the saucer crashes in the Capitol building is one of the most iconic moments in 1950s sci fi.

RED PLANET MARS is an interesting political, religious sci fi film. Goodness, I haven’t seen it in decades! TCM needs have a science fiction month and show it, THE ANGRY RED PLANET, THE 27TH DAY, etc.
DeleteI found it on YouTube a year or so ago, thinking it was going to be your normal '50's sci-fi , it was not at all what I expected a great story line that keeps you guessing until the end and very relevent for today. I think it's still free to view.
DeleteI dug up a few Best SciFi Films lists to get some ideas, there are quite a lot of really good ones. I could toss these 5 out and come up with 3 more lists that I like about as much.
