What are your five favorite science fiction films?
That's the topic for our first tweetathon, which is sort of a blogathon for Twitter. If you would like to participate, just go to Twitter and send a tweet with your five film picks and the hashtag #5FaveSciFiFilms.
If you'll include our Twitter name @classic_film, we'll share your selections with over 13,000 other movie fans.
Of course, you don't need a Twitter account to participate. You can also join the fun by listing your picks on Facebook, Instagram, or any other social media platform. Or, you can just leave a comment below with your five favorite science fictions films.
To get this event jump-started, here are our #5FaveSciFiFilms:
1. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
2. Quatermass and the Pit (Five Million Years to Earth) (1967)
3. The Andromeda Strain (1971)
4. The Power (1968)
5. The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961)
Twitter (shudder). CFTVC (comfy chair):
ReplyDelete1. The Thing From Another World (1951)
2. The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951)
3. Contact (1997)
4. Gattaca (1997)
5. Godzilla/Gojira (1954)
Great choices: The Andromeda Strain and The Power.
I love both versions of THE THING for different reasons. DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL works on so many different levels. And it's hard to believe that GODZILLA has now spawned 32 additional films and a huge merchandise industry! (Apparently, we are among the few people in the world that think THE POWER is an interesting sci fi movie.)
DeleteYeah, Rick, if nothing else, George Hamilton has The Power and Love At First Bite to hang his hat on, career-wise. The Power is just a good story.
DeleteIf I may, honorable mentions: Them!, Tremors, Forbidden Planet, (I like your) Quatermass and the Pit, and Andromeda Strain.
1. The Day The Earth Stood Still (The original )
ReplyDelete2. The Thing From Another World
3. Forbidden Planet
4. The Incredible Shrinking Man
5. Earth Versus The Flying Saucers (A Guilty Pleasure)
I love Richard Matheson's somewhat existential ending to SHRINKING MAN. To my surprise, no one mentioned EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS on Twitter, but the scene where the saucer crashes in the Capitol building is one of the most iconic moments in 1950s sci fi.
DeleteLove them all hard to pic just 5 but on my list would be
ReplyDelete1.Them
2.The Red Planet Mars
3.Independence Day
4.The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms
and yes
5. The Original Star Wars.
RED PLANET MARS is an interesting political, religious sci fi film. Goodness, I haven’t seen it in decades! TCM needs have a science fiction month and show it, THE ANGRY RED PLANET, THE 27TH DAY, etc.
DeleteI found it on YouTube a year or so ago, thinking it was going to be your normal '50's sci-fi , it was not at all what I expected a great story line that keeps you guessing until the end and very relevent for today. I think it's still free to view.
DeleteI dug up a few Best SciFi Films lists to get some ideas, there are quite a lot of really good ones. I could toss these 5 out and come up with 3 more lists that I like about as much.
ReplyDeleteForbidden Planet
The Terminator
Twelve Monkeys
Alien
Galaxy Quest
The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957);
ReplyDeleteThe Day The Earth Stood Still (1951);
E.T.: O Extraterrestre (1982);
The Original Star Wars;
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991).
